Our Story: Public Art in Welland

Art on Welland Bell Boxes was founded by Aldo Parrotta in July 2021 as a unique public art gallery experience in the heart of Welland. What began with seventeen Bell Canada utility boxes transformed into vibrant murals by local artists quickly became one of Welland’s most visible and talked-about community art projects. These outdoor gallery artworks continue to turn everyday street infrastructure into accessible public art, strengthening civic pride and Welland’s creative reputation.

Our Mission: Community‑Led Art & Culture

We strive to:

  • Showcase Welland’s public art scene and gallery-style murals
  • Create accessible art installations that beautify and build community pride
  • Provide a platform for emerging and established artists to shine

What We Do: Murals That Matter

  • Location Scouting – We independently scout and select prominent sites in distinct neighbourhoods all across Welland, including the north end, Dain City, downtown, and beyond. Each season, we look for new areas and community landmarks where public art can have the greatest impact.
  • Artist Engagement – Through open calls and curated selection, we support local artists and energize Welland’s art ecosystem.
  • Live Painting & Gallery Walks – Our murals often evolve during public events—real-time painting invites community interaction and creates gallery‑like experiences throughout the city.

Gallery‑Style Public Art: Why It Matters

  • Vibrant Urban Beautification – Utility boxes become mini art galleries, attracting locals and visitors exploring public art and mural tours.
  • Cultural Reflection – Our artwork tells the story of Welland—its canal history, neighbourhoods, and the unique spirit of the city.
  • Art Tourism & Community Connection – Murals along walking and cycling routes encourage art lovers and gallery-seekers to experience Welland in new ways.

Project Impact & Recognition

  • Recognized as a key initiative in Welland’s evolving public‑art network.
  • Featured in digital art‑gallery directories, community arts initiatives, and local cultural events.
  • Boosts the local art scene by spotlighting creative work beyond traditional galleries.
